60 is Nifty Couses and holes

There has been one change to the courses for this event. Mystic Oaks is out and Aberdeen is in. The reason for this change is so that we can end this competition a couple of weeks earlier. Following are the courses and holes. Remember there is a Par 3, 4, and 5 at each course. There are 10 courses listed but we will only take your score for your best 5 par 3’s, 5 par 4’s and 5 par 5’s.

Bear Creek holes 5, 11, 3

Clinton Hills holes 7, 11, 18

Columbia holes 18, 14, 1

Links at Dardenne holes 3, 14, 10

Prairies Cahokia holes 7, 10, 9

Landing at Sprit holes 8, 3, 16

Crystal Springs Quarry holes 12, 15, 8

Emerald Greens holes 10, 3, 4

Quaill Creek holes 16, 1, 9

Aberdeen holes 5, 12, 17

Depending on how many sign up for Sixty is Nifty will determine how many places we pay out in each flight. We would like to pay out to the top 10 of each flight.

New Discount Card – Get Yours at Meeting – March 22

Membership Discount Card

Starting this year, Metro Seniors will issue a Membership Discount Card instead of the Super Saver Coupon Book. This will be a numbered (the number will NOT be your ID#) plastic card the same size as a credit card that you can easily carry in your wallet.  The card will be good for the current year from a period of April 1st to March 31st of the following year.  If everything goes as expected, the card will be offered in succeeding years.  Of course, there will be a different color scheme on the card each year.  The card will have to be signed on the back in order to be valid.

The cards will be handed out at the March Meeting at your Division tables.  If you cannot attend the meeting, then see your  Division VP for your card at one of your normal weekly Division tournaments.

We have contracted with over 30 courses and golf stores to give you discounts equivalent to or better than the Super Saver Coupon Book.

You will only get one card, so don’t lose it!  Use the cards as much as you can (they are not valid for the weekly tournaments),  The more the cards are used, the more likely the courses and stores will be to want to participate in the future.

Flight Tees set for Special Events

We will keep the special event tee locations by flight as they were last year.

  • Players in Flights A and B from regular tees.
  • Players in Flights C and D will play from one tee box in front of regular
  • Players 75 years old and older will play from Senior tees.

The actual tee placements and colors will vary from course to course so the  Event Leaders for each event will announce the actual tee locations before the tournament begins.

This information will be added to the Special Events Schedule and Rules.

Holes In One – Stats Had YOUR Ace Yet? (Revised)

Note: Revised again – for Aces not included in the online reports for Steve Sauter.  Sorry for reporting Jim Bausch in error – my source had a head cold.

Ever wonder how many Holes-In-One Metro Seniors Members get?  Are we getting more or less Holes-In-One than “average”?  Who had one recently? How about “Celebrating” these events a little more?

The most referenced numbers for a Hole-In-One on a Par 3 are:

  • Odds of an amateur making a hole-in-one: 12,500 to 1
  • Odds of a low-handicapper making a hole-in-one: 5,000 to 1
  • Odds of a professional golfer making an ace: 2,500 to 1

Assuming four (4) Par 3 holes per round, for each 18 hole round of golf the odds are:

  • Odds of an amateur making a hole-in-one: 3125 to 1 per round
  • Odds of a low-handicapper making a hole-in-one: 1250 to 1 per round

How does Metro Seniors stack up to those odds?

From 2013 through 2015, we played a total of 28,000 rounds of golf.  We had 14 Aces paid out.

Drum Roll Please!

That is 1999 rounds for every Ace:  1999 to 1 per round

About half way between the “average” amateur and the low-handicapper.

It is most interesting, that the number look like they are improving.  But, I may be missing some data.

  • 2013 – 1 Ace  (bad year for aces)
  • 2014 – 5 Aces
  • 2015 – 8 Aces

The fourteen players who made these are:

2013 Div 2 Patrick Wampler
2014 Div 1 Jack Hipolito
Div 1 John Ammon
Div 2 Bill Molz
Div 3 Bill Riley
Div 1 Richard Bourisaw
2015 Div 1 Wardell Patterson
Div 1 Steve Sauter
Div 4 Allen F. Rector
Div 4 Donald J. Lemp
Div 5 Ed Rodgers
Div 5 Cap Kovarik
Div 5 Michael Walters

Division 1 has the most at 5, but Division 5 had 3 in their first year.

Now for those quick enough, thirteen players, 14 Aces. Hmmmmm

Yep, Allen F. Rector should have bought a lottery ticket. He got TWO (2) Aces this past year.

So how we get our Holes-In-One?  Play More (and perhaps pray more)!  Get that handicap down to 5, play 1250 rounds, and you’ll get it.  That is only 60 rounds per year for 22 years.

Now the final question – did they all buy the foursome a round?????

2016 Communications Survey Results

First of all, I do apologize to our members in Division 9 and to members without email.  The survey was online so the survey was limited to members with email.  For Division 9 members, I did not have a current email list and with time pressures, simply did not include you.   I think you needs are important, and will look at getting your responses in a followup survey.

Division 9 Members and all non-email members will have the opportunity to pick up a Member Book and a directory at the General Meeting (and at the course later).

Some Changes for 2016 – Board Meeting Summary

BOARD MEETING RESULTS

1/26/2016

Hi, this is Bob Zaruba, current President of MSLSGA. One of the new things in we are going to do in 2016 is to inform you of the decisions of the Board or new items during their meetings, so here are the high level results of the January 26th meeting:

Rainouts

Last November we had decided to change the rainout rule from 40 finishing players to 25% of the TOTAL golfers in the division as of the beginning of the season. In the meeting, it was voted to decrease this number to 20%. This will definitely lessen the required number of players finishing the round from what it has been in the past; the number will vary by division. NOTE: A player not finishing the round is STILL eligible for a closest-to-the-pin award or a Hole- in-One prize.

Closest-to-the-pin Markers

In order to limit the confusion of which CTTPs are regular and which are forward, they will be multi-colored. Current guess is that the Regular Tees will be Yellow and the Forward Tees will be Red.

Prize Money

To stay within our budget, we try to keep the weekly tournament prize money to about $26,000 each year. We are aware that there might be a large disparity of members per division, so we will determine a cutoff number of members. If your division is above that number, you would probably get six places per flight and perhaps differing dollar amounts per place. If your division is below that number, your division will probably get five places and perhaps less money per place. Again, the goal is to keep the total money at the $26,000 range.

Directory Changes

We have talked about a streamlined or on-line directory for years to keep the cost minimized. A survey was taken to get members responses to what it is they use from the directory. The results are:

  • New Members – a new book/pamphlet with rules, directions, instructions to help them get going
  • Member Book (everyone) – schedules, tee locations, special events info/sign-up, references for websites,
  • Member Roster as of March (separate, by division)

All information will also be available on the GOLFSTLSENIORS.ORG website as well.

Discount Cards

We will have a Discount Card this year instead of the Coupon Book. We have contracted with over 30 courses and golf stores to give you discounts equivalent to or better than the Coupon Book. This will be a plastic card (to be handed out in the March Meeting or from your Division VP) that you can easily carry in your wallet. You will only get one card, so don’t lose it! It will have to be signed on the back.

Raffle

There will be a 50-50 raffle to provide Member benefits. Ticket sales will start at the March Meeting and prizes will be awarded at an event later in the year. You do not have to be present to win.

Golf Show

We will again have a booth at the golf show February 12-14. If you would like to work one of the shifts, please contact Kevin Deschler at 314-262-9690 or kades52@yahoo.com.

Minutes of the Meeting

Complete minutes from our meetings will be available on the website in a few weeks. Please be aware that they are not the approved minutes (there may be a small error) until the following meeting.

Special Events

All Special Events will be 7:30 shotgun starts

New Members

New members can now hit from the Forward Tees in their first three rounds – if they prefer. They will not be competing for prize money in a flight until they are playing their fourth round. If after three rounds they are in A Flight, they must hit from the Regular Tees.

GolfSTLSeniors.org Website

This website now has a Forum, where any Metro Seniors Member can propose ideas and exchange ideas with other members. All can read the Forum, but to place a topic or reply to a topic, you have to be given your own personal ID and Password.
