The Championship Results are ALMOST complete – we are waiting on the last week scores from Division 2 at the Falls.
HOWEVER – I’d be checking now if you think you might be close. Although you might be listed as out the best 16 for a bracket, we usually have a few qualifiers who cannot attend. We can easily ask for 4 or 5 substitutes so even if you are 20th or 21st or …. , you may still be invited.
Click Here for the current results. The Final Championship Results will be available as soon as all data and analysis is complete.
Congrats to all players who have qualified and near qualifiers. You have had a great season! I hope you enjoy the results.
If you are already in the top 16 and you already know that you CANNOT attend, consider an email to Frank Mantia ASAP or decline immediately when you get the invitation.
If you are in the top 20 or so, please be ready to accept or decline the invitation immediately if you are contacted.
The Championship Tournament Team and OurGolfStats.com have been working very hard to make sure the results are accurate and timely. You will receive an invite as soon as we go through process. Please be ready to respond immediately.
Thanks for the feedback. I do think qualifying for the Championship is an honor. Certainly we want it to reflect our “best” players. We also want to include our wide range of players in the process and in the spirit of competitive play. How to decide what is “best”, fair, inclusive and reflective of our membership is the issue.
Clearly our absolute “best” players have the lowest gross scores, but that would eliminate all but about 64 players in our A Flights. Not very inclusive. I also suspect that some Divisions would be over represented and some perhaps not at all.
We spend lots of time and money on maintaining members’ handicaps for weekly tournaments. We manage 4 flights based on equal census in each handicap range for as much fairness and inclusion as possible. Clearly a wide handicap range as in all A Flights (10 to 15 points) is less “fair” than a 5 point range in B and C flights. However only a very small number of players with very low handicaps are in the widest range. (Example, we tried AA flights and Gross and Net for A flights and it actually seemed less fair, more confusing, and more work.)
Last year with A Flight forced to play back only, we had 50% selected from Low Gross and 50% from Low Net. This year we gave A Flight the choice to play Forward or Back. This is fair and, more fun and perhaps faster. Picking the Tee is part of competition.
However now we have to use Net Scores for all Flights including A. Average Gross Scores from Forward Tees will always be lower than Gross from Back Tees.
With multiple Flights, and multiple tees, we will use handicaps and net scores and do the best we can. This is why it is so important that everyone follow our rules, report their scores correctly, and that we have our courses use the proper tees for our handicap system. This is where the honor in golf resides.
Our leadership is incredibly focused on fairness, inclusion and competitive spirit. This will always be an issue for our committees (Executive, Tournament, Handicap, and Rules). It will be reviewed for next year and years following.
We would welcome any ideas on just how we select members for Championship, but please make sure to consider fairness, inclusion, across the full Association. Help us define “best” in that context.
I am disappointed. I totally agree with Vince (above) on Metro’s handicapping system. Fairness, inclusion and competitive spirit? It is unfair to lower handicap players. I also question, Division 1 having ONLY 7 players in the CHAMPIONSHIP out of 64 players and not one player in Bracket 1.
Friday events are great because of the foursome I play in and the comaraderie with several of division 1’s members. We have a great time. But playing in any other tournaments with the Metro Senior current rules is out of the question for me at this time.
Greg,
Sorry for your disappointment. This is worth more discussion so more members understand and can help guide this into the future,
I share your concern about Division 1. This appears to be the same issue for Pace of Play. Our data shows that Division 1 has gross and net scores averaging about 3 to 5 strokes higher than other Divisions. This is also relatively new – with a change that shows up within the last couple of years. We don’t understand this change yet but our distribution of handicaps is skewed to more higher handicap players than other Divisions. This may simply be new members coming in or older members getting older.
Most important – I do share your enthusiasm for Div 1 and our Friday guys. I came with friends and I now have many more. We have a great group of folks and know how to share a laugh.
