The results from the July 5, 2018 tournament at Columbia Bridges are in. The course won, as only 1 team could shoot par – rare for a scramble. Thanks to terrific money management by Tournament Committee Chairman Bill Molz, we were able to provide prize money to 2/3 of the teams playing. Steve Tighe, Rick Hines, Craig Carothers, and Gary Maule rounded out the committee. PRIZE MONEY WILL BE ON THE END-OF-YEAR METRO SENIORS PRIZE CHECKS. Team finish and prize amounts are on this spreadsheet.
12 teams in Flight 1 and 15 teams in Flight 2 competed for the 2-person scramble prize money. Division 3 Fearless Leader Gary Maule and his trusty sidekick Art Wash won Flight 1 and overall low score with a Net 63.55. Not far behind with a Net 64.2 were Division 3’s Steve Schwartz and Bill Shine. In Flight 2, Division 3’s Russ Owen and John Berkheimer shot a 71, Net 64.6, and took first place. There was a tie for 2nd place at Net 66.75 between Division 3’s Steve Tighe and Terry Gordon and Divsion 5’s Jim Estes and Hank Hollenberg.
Besides the 2-person scramble, there was a Division vs Division competition using “cross country” scoring. With that scoring, the overall 1st place team received a 1, 2nd place a 2, 3rd a 3, etc. Then the scores for the first 9 finishing teams from each Division were added and the lower score won. In last year’s Division Challenge, Division 5 won with a score of 102 to Division 3’s 107 – very close. This year, thanks to a strong finish by the top teams, Division 3 won with a score of 52 to 100.
A question came up at the end regarding how team handicaps were calculated, and I did not have time to respond. This competition used the same handicap calculations now used in Metro Seniors Special Events for 2-person scrambles. An explanation of that is in another post on our website, but repeated here.
