Pick Your Partner Pairing List Rev A

The updated Pairing List for the Pick Your Partner Special Event has been posted to the Metro Seniors web site. There were numerous changes over the last week, so be sure to look at the list. Or you can click here.

A reminder that the event is a 7:30 am Shotgun Start at Missouri Bluffs GC. SE committee members will be ensuring that we follow social distancing rules during the registration, cart loading, and lunch. Be sure to have your face mask on while you register and are getting ready to start and when you finish and get your lunch. We have asked the course to space out the carts and all carts have dividers.

There have been several questions on how the handicaps are calculated since handicaps are pretty low with our Special Events adjustments. Handicap calculations start with your handicap guide (index) posted on Our Golf Stats from week 25 & 26 June. Your Course Handicap is based on the course Tee Slope, Tee Rating, and Tee Par. We will be playing the Green Tees. The Green Tee Slope is 107, Tee Rating is 64.6, and Tee Par is 71. The standard USGA Slope for calculating handicaps is 113. So Missouri Bluffs Green Tee Slope is fairly low. And the Tee Rating of 64.6 is also low.

The formula for calculating Course Handicap is: Hdcp Guide X (Tee Slope/113) + (Tee Rating – Tee Par). Hdcp Guide X (107/113) + (64.6 – 71). So your Handicap Guide is lowered because of 107/113 and because the Tee Rating is less than Tee Par, you wind up subtracting the result, -6.4. Thus you wind up with a pretty low Course Handicap. Then you take 35% of the low team member handicap and 15% of the next lowest handicap and you get a pretty low team handicap.

See you all tomorrow and have a great time.

Pick Your Partner Pairings List

The Pairings List for the Pick Your Partner Special Event has been posted to the Metro Seniors web page. You can find the list by going to the Home Page, select Schedules and Results at the top of the page, select Special Events, and select Confirm – Wait – Pairings – Instructions. We calculate the Team Handicaps using the USGA recommended method for team events. Since we have not played a Special Event for some time and we have new members, I would suggest that you read the Special Events Handicap Calculation sheet on the web page. You can find the sheet by going to the Home Page, select Schedules and Results at the top of the page, select Special Events, and select Special Events Handicap Calculations. Or select the link to the left.

Pick Your Partner Special Event

It was decided at the Metro Seniors Board Meeting this morning that we would go forward with the Pick Your Partner Special Event to be held at Missouri Bluffs Golf Course on Tuesday, 14 July 2020. An updated Confirmed List has been posted to the Metro Seniors web page. There is no Wait List for the event at this time.

This event is a 2-Man Scramble with a Shotgun Start at 7:30 am. It will be 2 players per cart. Each cart will have a divider. If you registered as a single, you must agree to play with another member of our choosing to be your teammate. A prepacked lunch will be provided. There will be places to sit and eat after the round if you choose. However, due to social distancing requirements we will not be gathering as a large group under the pavilion.

If you did not respond to the original email sent out on 9 June asking if you elect to play or not, please provide your input if you are willing to play or want to withdraw and be added to the refund list to Frank McLaughlin (SE Chairman) via email (fmmcl@hotmail.com) or phone (636-358-8072).

Handicap Changes in 2020

There has been much discussion about the proposed handicap changes in 2020 as well as many things written about the changes and how to understand them. This is a synopsis of the changes and how they will affect Metro Seniors in 2020.

Max Handicap Guide

In 2019 the maximum handicap guide was 36.4 for males and 40.4 for females. In 2020, this will be increased to 54.0 for both males and females. What impact will this have to Metro Seniors? Only to D Flight, where those who really had a higher handicap guide than 36.4.

PS – If you had a max handicap guide of 36.4 at the end of 2019, you may start 2020 with a higher handicap guide due to this change.

Number of rounds considered for handicap guide

In 2019 we used the lowest 8 out of your last 16 rounds (no earlier than 2017). The USGA changed their usage to 8 of the last 20 rounds, so we changed ours to be a similar percentage, by using the lowest 7 of your last 16 rounds. In addition, all scores prior to 2018 will disappear from our records.

Course Handicap in 2020

The change in 2020 revises the formula by replacing the Course Rating delta between the Back and Forward tees to Course Rating – Course Par. This will not impact your competitiveness against others, but it will decrease the strokes you might receive at a particular course. As an example, a 10 handicap golfer at Gateway National might have received 11 strokes in the past, but only 6 in 2020. But ALL golfers will be similarly impacted, losing 4-8 strokes from the strokes they received in 2019. Net scores better than par will be an exception, not the rule. Another way to put it is that handicap guides will not change; course handicaps will.

Clear as mud? Bob Zaruba will discuss this briefly at the Annual Meeting on March 24th, then the entire Handicap Committee will be available after the meeting to answer any additional questions.
