Membership General Meeting Reminder – Tues, Nov 15, 2016 1 PM

Members are encouraged to attend the General Membership Meeting this Tuesday, November 15, 2016.  The meeting will start at 1:00 PM at the Kirkwood Community Center on Geyer Road.

Come to meet, thank and confirm your leadership (officers and committee members).  In addition:

  • Visit with Golf Buddies
  • Renew your membership (in person or use online registration)
  • Bring a new member for sign up
  • Find out about the 2017 Schedule
    • Weekly Tournaments
    • Special Events.
  • Rule Changes – All Flights can Chose Forward or Back Tees
  • Sign up for Starter / Scorers for 2017
  • Volunteer for Committee or possible Board / Officer Positions

 

 

2017 Weekly Tournament Schedule Set

The 18 Hole 2017 Season is set with courses and schedules for Divisions 1 – 5.

The Tournament Committee selected 20 of the courses to repeat from last year (2016).  Four (4) “new” courses were selected to swap in based on comments from members, surveys, participation, and discussion within the Tournament Committee.

COURSES

We have 24 separate courses on the schedule. Links @ Dardenne is scheduled to be played twice making up our 25 weeks.

We added 4 courses

  • The Legacy – Granite City, IL
  • Incline Village – Foristell MO
  • The Acorns – Waterloo, IL
  • Florissant – Florissant, MO

To make room for the “new” courses, we dropped 4 courses for 2017.

  • Hills @ McKendree
  • Normandie
  • Mystic Oaks
  • Quail Creek

The final details for each course (Tee Selections, Ratings, Slope) are in review between the Tournament and Handicap Committees now.

“NEW” 2017 Membership Renewal Procedures

As many of you may already be aware, Metro Seniors is introducing new renewal procedures for 2017.

The first is the introduction of the “New” Online Membership Renewal Application which will accept credit card payments.  The success of the Special Events online credit card payment system that we experienced this year was overwhelming in that we had 60% of our Special Event entries handled by credit card.  That proved to be a boon for Metro Senior with a great reduction in the number of checks needed to be processed.  With that success, it was decided that it would be the correct time to follow with the renewal process.

After you use the on-line renewal application, you will receive a reply email from elbowspace.com with the subject line: Metro Seniors — Your Information Has Been Received.  Print this receipt and keep it for your records.

The second new procedure has to do with mailing the renewal application.  For those members who prefer to mail in their renewals and pay with a check the attached Mail-in Renewal Form can be used.

Individual letters are being sent by mail to 31 of our current members.  Twelve of which apparently who do not have email, or a computer.  The other 19 letters are going to members have something wrong with their email addresses.  By sending out the letters, it is hoped that we are able to cover all of our members.  We would like to ask all of you to mention this email to your friends and playing partners, because we know that there will be others who might have emails that not active, messed up, or, they just don’t check their email on a regular basis.

We don’t want to overlook anyone!

While you are here, look over the Pace of Play Guidelines.  No one likes a long, slow golf round, waiting for a tee box or the next shot.  Following these ideas will have you and your group playing faster.  Encourage others to do the same and we all will have faster rounds that are more fun!

2017 Season Planning Started

The planning for the 2017 Golf Season has now started.  Specifically the Tournament Committee will be meeting to review the courses played this year and select the courses we will schedule for 2017.

Our objective will be to select weekly courses that offer quality and value for all our members throughout the Greater St. Louis area.  Key elements will be:

  1. Overall quality of the course and facilities
    1. Course Layout, Challenge, Distance
      1. Forward Tees – average about 5300 yds (4900 to 5700 yds), Slope Average 110
      2. Regular Tees – average about 5800 yds  (5500 to 6200 yds), Slope Average 117
    2. Course Conditions – Greens, Fairways, Hazards
    3. Facilities – Carts, Food, Parking
  2. Cost – $20 to $30 Range for Greens/Cart
  3. Location – Distance and Highway Access
    1. West to East – Wright City MO to Fairview Heights IL
    2. North to South – Alton IL to Waterloo IL.
  4. Course Management and Relationship with Association
  5. Member Feedback

We receive suggestions to drop or add courses every year.  Please tell your Division VP your thoughts about dropping or adding courses ASAP.  Now is the time.

New Division 1 Board of Governor Representatives

With recent appointments, we have filled the openings in Board of Governors Representatives for Division 1.

Division 1 Board representatives are now:

  • Dennis Carter – 1 Year (2016)
  • Pat Britt – 2 Year (2016 – 17)
  • Larry Roth – 3 Year (2016 – 18)

They will attend Board meetings as voting members representing the membership from Division 1.  They will also be able to sit on standing committees and serve on special teams as needed by the Board.

Division 1 – please get to know them and offer your suggestions, comments and yes, even complaints to them.  They will represent your views in the Board of Governors meetings.

We do have openings on committees and will need board member replacements for each upcoming year.  Please volunteer to help.

Div 3 VP Changes – Craig Carothers Retiring – Gary Maule Replacing

Craig Carothers Retires as Division 3 VP

After many years of service to the Board of Governors and as VP of Division 3, Craig Carothers has decided to retire to spend more time “improving” his golf game.

Craig has been a very important contributor to the league and active in many roles over the years.  In past years he chaired the Handicap Committee and helped establish much of the system we have now.  Recently he has served as Division 3 VP to keep it running smoothly.  His Division 3 Mentoring is a model for helping get new members engaged.  He suggested and implemented many of the operational changes that make things better.

Craig has also been a key contributor in developing our website communications, especially in the last year.  He will be continuing to help with the website as one of our administrators.  For the present, Craig will also continue to support Metro St. Louis Seniors golf thought the OurGolfStats.com website where all of our statistical and handicap information is stored.

So – now that Criag as some “free time”, play with him and see if he really is improving.

Gary Maule – New Division 3 VP

Gary Maule, effective immediately, is the new Division 3 VP and member of the Board of Governors as approved at the Board meeting of June 14, 2016.

Gary is a quick study and with support from Craig and the Board will hit the ground running.

Be sure to meet and wish Gary well at the coming Weekly and Special Event Tournaments.

2016 Communications Survey Results

First of all, I do apologize to our members in Division 9 and to members without email.  The survey was online so the survey was limited to members with email.  For Division 9 members, I did not have a current email list and with time pressures, simply did not include you.   I think you needs are important, and will look at getting your responses in a followup survey.

Division 9 Members and all non-email members will have the opportunity to pick up a Member Book and a directory at the General Meeting (and at the course later).

Some Changes for 2016 – Board Meeting Summary

Hi, this is Bob Zaruba, current President of MSLSGA. One of the new things in we are going to do in 2016 is to inform you of the decisions of the Board or new items during their meetings, so here are the high level results of the January 26th meeting:

Rainouts

Last November we had decided to change the rainout rule from 40 finishing players to 25% of the TOTAL golfers in the division as of the beginning of the season. In the meeting, it was voted to decrease this number to 20%. This will definitely lessen the required number of players finishing the round from what it has been in the past; the number will vary by division. NOTE: A player not finishing the round is STILL eligible for a closest-to-the-pin award or a Hole- in-One prize.

Closest-to-the-pin Markers

In order to limit the confusion of which CTTPs are regular and which are forward, they will be multi-colored. Current guess is that the Regular Tees will be Yellow and the Forward Tees will be Red.

Prize Money

To stay within our budget, we try to keep the weekly tournament prize money to about $26,000 each year. We are aware that there might be a large disparity of members per division, so we will determine a cutoff number of members. If your division is above that number, you would probably get six places per flight and perhaps differing dollar amounts per place. If your division is below that number, your division will probably get five places and perhaps less money per place. Again, the goal is to keep the total money at the $26,000 range.

Directory Changes

We have talked about a streamlined or on-line directory for years to keep the cost minimized. A survey was taken to get members responses to what it is they use from the directory. The results are:

  • New Members – a new book/pamphlet with rules, directions, instructions to help them get going
  • Member Book (everyone) – schedules, tee locations, special events info/sign-up, references for websites,
  • Member Roster as of March (separate, by division)

All information will also be available on the GOLFSTLSENIORS.ORG website as well.

Discount Cards

We will have a Discount Card this year instead of the Coupon Book. We have contracted with over 30 courses and golf stores to give you discounts equivalent to or better than the Coupon Book. This will be a plastic card (to be handed out in the March Meeting or from your Division VP) that you can easily carry in your wallet. You will only get one card, so don’t lose it! It will have to be signed on the back.

Raffle

There will be a 50-50 raffle to provide Member benefits. Ticket sales will start at the March Meeting and prizes will be awarded at an event later in the year. You do not have to be present to win.

Golf Show

We will again have a booth at the golf show February 12-14. If you would like to work one of the shifts, please contact Kevin Deschler at 314-262-9690 or kades52@yahoo.com.

Minutes of the Meeting

Complete minutes from our meetings will be available on the website in a few weeks. Please be aware that they are not the approved minutes (there may be a small error) until the following meeting.

Special Events

All Special Events will be 7:30 shotgun starts

New Members

New members can now hit from the Forward Tees in their first three rounds – if they prefer. They will not be competing for prize money in a flight until they are playing their fourth round. If after three rounds they are in A Flight, they must hit from the Regular Tees.

This website now has a Forum, where any Metro Seniors Member can propose ideas and exchange ideas with other members. All can read the Forum, but to place a topic or reply to a topic, you have to be given your own personal ID and Password.
